AZAANEX BUILD

Flooring Installation

Flooring fails at the edges of the sales pitch: the wrong product for the room, laid over a subfloor nobody checked, without the expansion gaps Canadian humidity swings demand. Choosing well costs nothing extra — it just takes honest advice.

Matching the floor to the room — and the climate

Canadian houses swing from furnace-dry winters to humid summers, and floors move with them. Solid hardwood is beautiful and refinishable but belongs above grade in stable rooms; engineered hardwood tolerates movement better and is usually the smarter basement-adjacent choice. Luxury vinyl plank has conquered kitchens, basements and rental units for a reason — waterproof, tough, decent underfoot. Tile owns wet rooms. Carpet still earns bedrooms and basement floors where warmth matters.

We’ll tell you when the cheaper product is genuinely the right one — vinyl plank in a rental unit beats hardwood on every practical axis — and when spending more actually buys something, like refinishability in a forever home.

Preparation is the actual job

The installation you see takes a day or two. The part that decides whether the floor lasts is underneath: subfloor flattened and secured (squeaks get fixed now or never), moisture-tested concrete before anything goes over it, underlayment matched to the product, acclimatization time for wood products, and expansion gaps that respect the seasons. Skipping preparation is how a two-year-old floor develops gaps, peaks and clicks.

Frequently asked questions

Which flooring is best for a basement?

Vinyl plank or tile for anything with moisture history; engineered products only after the basement is confirmed dry. Solid hardwood below grade is a mistake we’ll talk you out of.

Can you fix squeaks while replacing the floor?

Yes — with the old floor up, refastening the subfloor to the joists is quick and cheap. It’s the one moment squeaks are easy to kill, so we always do it.

Do I need to move the furniture out myself?

No — room clearing and replacement can be part of the quote. For whole-home jobs, we sequence rooms so you’re never fully displaced.

How soon can we walk on the new floor?

Floating floors: immediately. Glue-down and some tile: typically 24 hours before furniture. We state the timing per product in the quote so there’s no guessing.
