Radon Testing

Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in Canada, it seeps up from the ground into basements everywhere from Halifax to Kelowna, and you cannot see, smell or taste it. The only way to know your number is to test — so test.

What radon is and why Canada cares

Radon is a radioactive gas produced naturally as uranium breaks down in soil and rock. Outdoors it disperses harmlessly; inside a closed Canadian house in winter, it accumulates. Health Canada’s guideline is 200 becquerels per cubic metre — above that, remediation is recommended. Roughly seven per cent of Canadian homes test above the line, and you cannot guess which ones from the street: your neighbour’s reading tells you almost nothing about yours.

The credible test is a long-term one — a detector placed in the lowest lived-in level for at least three months, ideally over winter when levels peak. We arrange certified testing, and the short version of the result is a single number you can act on.

If the number is high

A high reading is fixable, and fixing it is routine work for a certified mitigator — usually a sub-slab depressurization system: a pipe and fan assembly that vents soil gas outside before it enters the house. Installed in a day in most homes, and post-mitigation testing confirms the fix worked.

We coordinate mitigation with certified professionals and re-test afterwards, so the file closes with a number below the guideline, not with an invoice and a shrug.

Why choose AZAANEX

Certified professionals

Testing and any mitigation arranged with C-NRPP-certified radon professionals.

Tested to the guideline

Long-term testing per Health Canada guidance — the kind of result you can actually rely on.

Plain-number results

One figure, explained, with a clear recommendation — no scare tactics either way.

Mitigation to closure

If levels are high, we coordinate the fix and the re-test that proves it worked.

How it works

  1. Book the test

Tell us the property and we arrange the detector placement — right location, right duration.

  2. Test period runs

Minimum three months, ideally through winter. You live normally; the detector does the work.

  3. Get your number

Lab-analyzed result with a plain explanation of what it means for your home.

  4. Mitigate if needed

Above the guideline, we coordinate certified mitigation and confirm the result with a re-test.

Coverage

Available across Canada — radon does not respect provincial borders, and neither does this service. Coordinated from our Toronto office. See where we work.

Who does the work

Radon measurement and mitigation are carried out by professionals certified under the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP). AZAANEX arranges and coordinates the work.

Frequently asked questions

Why a three-month test and not a quick one?

Radon levels swing daily and seasonally. Short tests are useful in real-estate deadlines, but Health Canada bases decisions on long-term results — that’s the number worth acting on.

My neighbour tested low. Am I fine?

Unfortunately not — radon entry depends on your specific foundation, soil contact and airflow. Next-door houses regularly test on opposite sides of the guideline.

What does a high result mean for selling my home?

Less than you fear. A mitigated house with a documented low re-test is arguably a stronger listing than an untested one.

Does a new house need testing?

Yes. New builds are tighter, which can trap more radon, not less. Some new homes come with rough-in pipes that make mitigation cheaper — but only a test tells you if you need it.
